hon. dr ismaila ceesay
Hon. Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, appointed in March 2024 as The Gambia’s Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, is a prominent academic and political leader known for his work on governance, democratic reforms, youth empowerment, and communication policy. Born in Brikama, he holds a PhD and MSc in African Studies from the University of Edinburgh and a BSc in Political Science from Stockholm University.
He previously served as Senior Lecturer and Head of the Political Science Department at the University of The Gambia and taught internationally in Europe and China. His research and consultancy work with institutions such as the EU, PRIO, Afrobarometer, and V-Dem focuses on African politics, security, and democratic participation.
As Minister, he oversees government communication, media reforms, and digital misinformation response, and represents The Gambia in global forums. His awards include the Pan-African Humanitarian Award and recognition among West Africa’s most influential young people. He is multilingual, speaking English, Swedish, Mandinka, Wolof, and Aku.
